Read things that are interesting and not on some arbitrary curriculum

Learn more music on the piano

Write more code

Meet up with friends

The sum total of the personal importance of these things at the moment is greater than the need to get 600 points. Couple that with the fact that the maximum points I predict I need for my 1st choice this year given a huge rise will be ~400 it’s hard to motivate oneself to hit the books.

Leaving cert be gone!

Absolutely love this song from the latest album. Great work

Dvorak for the win?

So today I sat down to type out some Hamlet quotes for the mocks and it hit me that I was finally seeing an improvement in my typing, not only with a slight speedbump but that the rate of mistakes seems to have gone down quite a bit as well. So it seems that the change is finally starting to pay off ever so slightly. Don’t know how many hours practice I’ve had since I changed over but I’d hope that this level of improvement continues for the next while.

Now back to study….. which delights me not, nor exams either

New Music: Kate Miller-Heidke

Last night I had the opportunity to see the ever amazing Ben Folds live in concert for the first time and I can say it’s a concert I won’t soon forget. Ben played an incredibly good mix of both his old stuff and songs from his latest album “Lonely Avenue” to a very enthusiastic audience in Vicar Street.

The supporting act, Kate Miller-Heidke and her husband Kier, though are what I’d like to talk about. They’re an Australian 2-piece that are touring with Ben for his European tour and last night was their first time playing in Ireland. The music was fantastic with Kate singing and occasionally taking to the keyboard with Kier on the guitar singing backing vocals. Kate has an amazing voice (she’s won awards in Aus for classical singing) and the variety in the music was really really enjoyable, so much so that I rushed to pick up her
“Curioser” as soon as the show ended. It’s been playing on repeat ever since and it keeps getting better and better every time.

I’d embed that video only youtube won’t let me. Give it a look. It’s very good

Simple humour works best

Simple humour works best

Cowengate

Why have I got the feeling that Cowen and company are having a laugh at our expense? I absolutely love this type of mathematical analysis on what is essentially “noise”.
Ever since I saw the film I have been listening to the the soundtrack quite a bit. I’m astonished to read that Zimmer wrote the entire thing without having seen the film once. I guess it shows how well himself and Christopher Nolan can work together when they’re paired up. Inception is just another great example of their work together. Both the Batman films were also very very impressive

Firefox 4 Beta builds

For the first time in a while Firefox seems like it can actually give Chrome a run for its money. It launches with minimal dock-bouncing and its rendering speeds are genuinely very good. There are some drawbacks in that not all the extensions that I’d usually install are updated to work with Firefox 4 Beta 8 yet (most notably Greasemonkey which is required for the Reddit Enhancement Suite - most useful thing ever) but no doubt these will come in time.

iTerm 2

Being honest the default Terminal app is lacking particularly with 256 colour support which just annoys me. iTerm was a great project until it was discontinued so I was really happy to hear that it had been forked and restarted. I’m discovering more and more little features as I use it. Autocomplete and full-screen are really nice when you want to get work done without distraction. As someone who tries to spend as much time in the command line as possible (just for the craic?) its nice to see that there’s finally a good Terminal emulator for OS X which can rival its counterparts on other OS’s (I’m looking at you Linux…)

Moleskin idea catcher

So I was fortunate enough to receive a pretty neat moleskin journal for Christmas and I’ve decided that I am going to try and keep it on my person for the entire year as a new years resolution with the intention of jotting down anything I find of interest whether it be ideas for web applications to develop in the future or even phone numbers of interest. I think it’ll be interesting to have after a full year of use to be able to review the year in detail and see how ideas progressed or were forgotten.

I’ve tried using various phone applications for this over the years on both iDevices and Android but I have a feeling a physical notebook will encourage me to keep more detailed notes and indeed to take them on a more frequent basis.

I have no idea if I’ll end up continuing this for the year but I’m determined to give it a good shot. No doubt I’ll post the interesting results here at some stage.
